Do I have to paint the insides of my cabinets?

I bought cabinet paint to paint my oak cabinets. Do I have to paint the insides also? These cabinets are in excellent condition, but I want them gray to update my kitchen. Am I crazy to attempt this?

No, you don`t have to, however, it might be pretty to spray paint the insides with a pretty colorful accent .......and i`d spray paint the insides cause it`s much easier than crawling inside each cabinet to paint with a brush. If you decide to do it, be sure you do the insides first, before you do the outsides!

Nooooo, but it sure will look better and prettier. I didn't and later wished I had, because every time I opened the door,it was like...I am unfinished and would look prettier in a color. And whatever is in there shows up better and easier in a light color other than wood .and do it before...I know,I , you , just want it DONE!

Hi Kimberli, No, you don't. It is a personal choice for everyone.

There is no rule of thumb for painting. It is truly personal taste.

Im curious, what is cabinet paint? what kind of paint do you use to paint your cabinets?
  • I personally would not paint the insides especially if they are clean and in great shape. Just take your time and make sure you prep the cabinets otherwise you will have problems. What kind of cabinet paint did you buy? I would degloss the cabinets and clean them very well. Light coats and take your time and let the paint cure- meaning no one touches them for at least a day! I just repainted my cabinets and this time I made sure no one touched them for 24 hours because last time i got in a hurry and put everything back on too quick and I had scratches and issues. let the paint cure for a couple days at least before touching and putting handles back on. just some advice from someone who has tried to go too fast. good luck

Good morning Kimberli. No, you don't have to paint the interior but I do recommend painting both sides of the door at least. We painted the interior with white and used a light blue for the exterior and door and drawer interiors.I really love the clean bright look the white give those dark cabinets.

I used painters tape around the inner cabinet frame were the doors met the casing. I opted not to paint the inside of the cabinets and they turned out just fine. I think its all about personal taste in the end

We didn't paint the inside of our cabinets.....just the inside of the door and the visible 'lip' of the actual opening edge.....

We didn't paint the inside of our cabinets, either. We just cleaned them well. Works for us.

I would imagine you could also use a contact paper or wallpaper on the inside

I painted the inside only because my children never close the doors and it would bug me to see the "old" color all the time. But it is personal preference. You can purchase contact paper and line the back and bottom of the cabinet insides. It gives a nice pop.

I did paint mine and love how it brightened the area. Made it easier to see what your looking for in those bottom cabinets.

I haven't painted the inside of ours, yet but was considering using contact paper.
