Most chalk-painters tell you to use wax. I have been using matte finish polyurethane or varnish with great success. With a chair, if it has a lot of rungs, you might consider a spray poly or wax-saves time and provides even coating.

Hi Ch, I use polyacrylic. I can spray or foam brush it on. I love the look it leaves and the durability it gives. I never use wax!

Polyurethane is not for a painted chair. It is used for sealing wood. I would use the spray as Hope said.

I would us the spray. I think it would be easier to get around rungs. With a brush it might be harder to avoid runs.

I would use a water based polyurethane or wax. The wax you could use clear and if you wanted to give it an aged look follow with a dark wax in creases and corners etc. This can be tricky if you havent done it before. Water based polyurethanes are great and very protective and are a good choice on a piece that will get a lot of use. If you dont want a gloss or high sheen look for a matte finish. If you use a gloss finish it will kind of defeat the purpose of the chalk paint that gives such a nice soft velvety finish. I refinish furniture and have had good luck with both depending on the use for the piece. Good luck to you with whatever you choose.

Wax. I had read about a good one from Annie Sloan but ended up using a regular wood finishing wax that I was able to find at a hardware store. Worked great on the couch I painted and the bathroom vanity too

I was worried about that too but it disappeared and now my couch feels like leather. I love it!
