Inexpensive deck

My hubby and I would LOVE to have a deck out back but just can't afford it. We currently have wood chips in a 10'x20' area for our grill and lounge chairs. Any ideas as to what we could do to improve that?

If you have wood chips, I am going to assume that you have a flat area. With that being said, I would suggest either using concrete landscaping blocks with the wood chips in between the stones or to purchase a concrete frame and pour your own concrete to make a patio that is more stable than the current wood chips.

Using pressure treated pine, you should be able to build a deck for around $15.00 per square foot. If the area, where you want the deck, is level....you should have no problems. If that is still too many $$$$, you could add 12 X 12 pavers to add some solid areas to the wood chips in a checker board pattern......that would also look nice. Good luck, Gary

I agree that if you have a level spot, you can put down concrete pavers which run about 1.40 at Home Depot. Dig down about 3", pour in 1" of sand, level out and for about $250 you can put in a 12x12 patio. Add some plants around one side and add to it as you want to expand it. And pavers do not require any upkeep.

Hi Patti, This is what I did . It took a couple of weeks. I may be faster for you..Craigslist free section. Keep checking the for paving stones. larger the better. I didnt bother with the bricks(just way to much work) It may not happen over night , but it will happen. I ended up getting about 600 sqft from 3 different people and 3 different sizes of pavers ranging in size from 9x9 ,18x18, 24x24. I used road maulch (like a crushed gravel) instead of sand to deter ants, its much harder for them to tunnel into and its also much cheaper and you get the almost the same look as sand .I have not put them all down yet, been busy. I too am on a tight budget and this worked perfect for me. With craigslist you HAVE to check constantly pavers are in demand this time of year. people are also wanting to change them out this time of year . It doesnt get cheaper than that ! And my pavers were in perfect condition and best of all FREE. I hope this helps Patti. Any questions please feel free to just ask

Don''t forget to add landscape cloth under everything after you have leveled the earth. It really helps with the sneaky weeds!
