What are good colors for dining rooms? I've hear to stay away from blue. Thoughts?

Hey neighbor. That photo sure doesn't look like Greeley. Color is a really personal decision, so it's hard to say. I wouldn't mind a blue dining room. I'd look around your living room and focus on a color that either matches or neatly contrasts a favorite tablecloth, centerpiece, picture, etc. There are also online tools at the Sherwin-Williams site and others where you can upload photos and sample a color in your photo, or just test several shades of color on the walls in your photos.

The Sherwin Williams color program is Color Snap and it is free. You are right, blue is not a good choice because it is the color of molded food.. The warm tones such as reds & oranges stimulate the appetite and conversation.Green tones are calming colors, and neutrals are just that, neutral.

Well, color can be relative and people have preferences. I recently saw a dining room that was done in Navy blue and I felt it was a great color. The lady had Silver accents and White trim that worked so well for her. Why don't you post a picture of your space here and the we all can give you some direction. I myself recently did a blue/green color for a client, 50% hated it 50% loved it, but my client loved it and that was what mattered the most. Choose a color or take inspiration from a magazine or your favorite scarf and the play with it. As Lee Anne suggested use the Snap App from SW to pick the right paint color from your inspirational piece.

Thanks guys! I'm going to follow you advice and I think I will start by picking out a table cloth. I found a few that I like at world market. I'll keep you posted with any updates! Thanks again and I'll use that Color snap too. Oh and @Steve you are right on, that isn't Greeley ha took a trip to San Diego!

The light exposure (east, west, etc.) and the colors of adjacent rooms can be good starting places. What feel do you want the room to have? Dramatic and glamorous, light and airy, etc.?

Well we are going through a house overhaul and painting the majority. Right now the adjacent room (living) is a dove grey and white, but thinking about changing for a warmer feeling. We purchased a very warm burnt orange color. Thinking maybe a good feature wall color.

@Lisa orange is very on trend and can work very well to add energy with a neutral like gray.

@Lisa D ....I know there are a lot of ' trendy ' colours out there....but I personally would go with something you can actually ' live with ' , whether thats a nuetral or a hue of one of your favorite colours. Trends come and go, I look more towards ' longevity ' and what is trendy now may become dated in a year or two. I like to use colors ( for the background) that shows off the other things IN the room, and the walls serve as the ' framework ' for everything else. ... but nuetral walls dont have to be boring , blah colours !

Blue rooms or blue plates are not known as Colors that stimulate the appetite like red. But I can be hungry in any color of room. :-)

I agree with Shelby-I painted my diningroom in a nice beige about 15 years ago-I find I can totally change the room with drapes or flowers or chair covers. I have painted rooms in every colour of the rainbow, but the neutral ones give me much more flexibility and creativity.
