and our question is do we continue the glossy white trim of our crown molding or do we do the trim over our cabinets like the cabinets. We're going to be using the glazed product on the cabinets. Help!!

  • Sandy, all I can offer here is to say, prep, prep, prep. The system is inexpensive. Expect realistic results. It never looks as good as on the packaging....
  • Depending upon the colors that you choose would depend upon if you painted the trims to match or not. This is really a personal choice for you to make. When matching the trims to blend into the cabinets you hide the trims doing it in this fashion. Meaning if the trims are not really that nice, you should consider painting them along with the cabinet. If the trims are really nice and offer something to the look of the room other then to just fill the space, then keep them different then the cabinet. Most cases the trims hide the difference in the height between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. If these were to stand out by not matching the cabinets you may see this difference which will make the cabinets or ceiling look uneven. Lots to think about. And follow Amazing's post as well. Prep is what its all about.

The crown on the cabinets should match the cabinets because it looks to be a part of them. CP
  • I have to agree with Peace here. Go with what matches the cabinets. When you are finished, please let us know what you think of the product and the results, we have a bunch of people who ask about this sort of thing and it would be nice to have a personal testimonial about it. Photos would be great as well!
  • I'm in Peace and Dan's comments, but do find out the longevity of this product. My "custom" kitchen cabinetry had a thermofoil finish that many home builders were using about ten years ago. it was the latest and best according to many professionals. Now, many homeowners like me have cabinets faces that are peeling and in my case, had to be completely removed. Rustoleum Finishes might be fine; just make sure!
  • Before you decide to repaint your trim molding, be sure you have good stop and start points as to where the finish begins and ends. If you have a large open floor plan, it may look odd to have a different color of trim in the kitchen but not in the rest of the area.

I would keep the molding white otherwise it will blend in with the cabinets.
  • Match to the cabinets. The Rustoleum product is cost effective way to give yourself a new look as a DIY project. I've used it a couple of times and the results were okay. Thermofoil cabinets were always junk....if you asked most contractors. The bigger problem with them is that steam and moisture from cooking usually causes them to peel. We've typically have just replaced the damaged doors when that has happened.
  • If your crown molding is "attached to" the cabinets, then you want to finish it to match the cabinets. If it is attached to a soffit that is above the cabinets, then you should leave it as it is.

There are 2 crowns, room and cabinetry. The room crown remains with the house, the cabinet crown stays with the cabinetry. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much everyone. The crown around the room will remain white and I will match the other to the cabinets since it is attached. I have one small piece over a door that is between the cabinets. Guess I'll have to decide as I go. Right now it's white.
  • Good luck with things, let us know how it goes. for the small piece of crown over the door, wait until last for that if it is possible, that way you can get a look at it with all the other stuff in place. If it looks strange or out of place to you, then go ahead and change it.
  • Generally the crown molding trim above the cabinets is painted with the cabinets, and looks the best that way...

Please post and let us know how you like this product after you complete it. l I have used the Rusteoleum Furniture Transformation kit and LOVED it. Was thinking of purchasing the cabinet kit for my kitchen cabinets.

I was extremely satisfied with the results and have received so many compliments. I went with the molding matching around the cabinets and it looks great!

@Sandy T Did you use the glazing product that came with the kit? I want to re-do my kitchen cabinets but don't want bright white. Would love to see a pix. I painted a dresser red and glazed it with black (using the furniture kit) and it is amazingly beautiful!
