I am considering faux shiplap?

I'm considering raw paneling placed horizontally on the wall behind the stove, sink, etc. used as a backsplash. Would this work if painted with a creamy white gloss paint? Am I going completely in the wrong direction here? Creatively challenged here!!

  • I am sorry to say it will look like you put paneling sideways. To get this look for a backsplash look at flooring and always check out the clearance and markdown racks. If you want it creamy white I would look at beadboard as the alternative too. Whatever you decide, and this comes from experience, choose something that will clean up! If it looks pretty and doesn't clean up you are going to cry when you have to rip it up and redo it. Been there. done that. You can create a ship lap look with boards but this may not be budget friendly. But if you are only doing a backsplash, then look into tongue and groove boards at your local lumber yards and home stores. good luck!

    • @Wanday your welcome. if you go to a natural look then make sure to seal it and I would use several coats of a polyurethane for a slick finish to clean. Make sure the boards are smooth too so sanding might be part of the project. good luck!

If you want a shiplap look you can achieve it cheaply using Luan from Lowes which is about $13 a sheet. They can cut it in strips for you. We cut our own but in stripsnof 6inch wide. Found our studs and cut the boards in different lengthes. These then can be nailed into your studs. Make sure to use a seal on them as they will need to resist all those fun kitchen items! Hope this helped we just did our ceilings like this and absolutely love it!

Hi, the whole idea of a backslashes is to protect the surface from water, and other food splashes, and easy clean up and is non pores. To protect from growth of mold and mildew. if any of the items you are thinking about do not fit that protection and function then I would select another to save yourself from cleaning and sealing and all the work that would be needed in a pores surface year to year. The mess from grease is a big consideration in a kitchen. flooring maybe interesting. They do make floor tiles in a wood style, and the new laminates, linoleum and vinyl to me would make easy clean ups and they are non pores to boot. but trial and error is fun when you love diy. you learn first hand what you like and don't like and what works and what is a lot of up keep. Good luck!! smile. I like the old saying try to work smarter not harder! Smile
