Painting bead board

Does anyone know if bead board paneling (like you buy in sheets at big box stores) can be painted? I want to use it in a kitchen as a backsplash. If possible, what type of paint? Primer first? Washable? Durable???

Semi gloss for a backsplash. A good primer for paneling is what you'll need especially since this will be surface cleaned a lot. Good luck!

use good primer and work it into the seams. I would use a gloss if your using it as a backsplash as it will be cleaned a lot

Primed with Zinzer and painted with white Glidden semi-gloss. Yes, I have wiped mine down. Made the bead board so elegant looking.

We had the glossy kind in a basement bedroom - if yours is glossy, be sure to use a good deglosser before priming.

Yes, it can certainly be painted as mentioned above! One word of caution-use a roller or better yet a brush that does not leave lint behind. The sheets of beadboard can sometimes be a little rough and will grab fuzzies off the roller which really show up with any type of satin or gloss paint. I learned the hard way and had to sand most of a small room to get them off!

Sorry, I don't have the package anymore to look up brand. Ask at a PAINT store (not big box store) for their suggestion. You will pay more-but the end result will be worth it! Even using a high end roller cover or brush-I would still suggest sanding lightly between finish coats and using a vacuum and tack cloth to remove dust/lint before recoating. Your backsplash will likely be well lit with undercounter lights, etc and will show imperfections readily. I am sure you know that you can reuse roller covers by wrapping them tightly in plastic wrap between coats. Some of the higher end covers also say that they can be rinsed out (like a brush) and reused for another project. I have never tried that!We bought our beadboard plywood sheets at Lowes for $19.99 per sheet. Here is a photo (in progress) of how we used them in a closet/dressing room. You've already received many helpful suggestions so the only thing I will add is my experience.... beadboard is SUPER durable so you should not regret the install. I have it as wainscot throughout our main floor, painted white, and can't believe the kicking it can take. Highly scrub-able (with a good quality paint) and highly resistant to all kinds of abuse. Even in our small entryway, it still looks fantastic. I would have had to patch and repaint drywall many times over otherwise.
