Do I need a new door?

I am not sure if anything can be done with this. Whatever was used in between the panels is peeling and it looks terrible. There's nothing else wrong with the door so I hate to have to buy a new one. I would love any suggestions.

So, is it UNDER that top panel?? Have you tried removing that lighter center panel? I wouldn't get a new door, either...if you can remove that panel and get to the design - scrape it off - you can always apply/stencil/paint/decoupage/whatever another design there, seal it, and calk around it this time so it doesn't get ruined.

@KatAych I will try to remove it and see if you can get to that area. A stencil is a great idea - Thank you!

@Margie Ok so if you can remove the panel I would just clean off whatever is on it and if you prefer leave it plain or put a piece of the window covering that Home Depot carries in all different varieties located in the rug department.

If the window is just decorative with the white stuff between panes, you SHOULD be Able to remove the framework around the glass, separate panes and remove all the yuck, replace the trim. Done. Is the window double pane energy efficient? If that's the case, you will probably have to get a new window made

@Linda Zinn Wonsil I wonder where I could get a new window made for it.

If it's a thermopane window you could take it to a place like Feldco
  • If you know where the door was purchased or what the manufacturer is then you can order a replacement window. Check your home stores and take a picture of the door and measurements for the window. On the inside (of your house and door) the framework will have plugs (they look like buttons) those pop out to reveal small screws that are removed and out pops the window. Hope this helps

To answer your question...YES! Stop the madness! This is a cheap door. No matter what you are talking about fix or replacing you are talking a couple hundred bucks, a night out. Get rid of the headache and replace the door. Go to Lowes. Get over it.

You could paint it with Annie Sloan chalk paint it sticks to anything. Then stencil it with another color for contrast! !

It appears that the molding can be easily removed. It does not appear to be original to the door? Then you will be able to scrape the window. If you don't break it, replace the same molding on a CLEAN window. If privacy is an issue, put privacy film on the outside of the glass.

Replace the entire framing with a stained glass picture.

These inset panels are almost always inserts. On one side or the other (usually inside) there should be screws. You can unscrew these windows and pop them out. You should be able to order a new insert from any hardware store that sells doors and they come in different styles. We found one at a discount salvage hardware store so call around. Just make sure you have the exact measurements!
