Good cleaners for light-colored fabric??

KatAych
by KatAych
Hey, friends & neighbors! ;-p I just scored this F-R-E-E settee couch!!! It's in really good shape - I'll need to replace the 2 back legs, but other than that, no tears in the fabric - just a dirt smudge here and there. I was planning to steam clean the entire thing, but does anyone have any suggestions on spot cleaning this light fabric?

If the sofa was free--I would PAY a professional cleaner to come in and do the cleaning. It won't be expensive ( I have paid 85 for a sofa and loveseat in MA )

@Peggy B I wholeheartedly agree, as I've commented below. On a side note, we used to work in Easton before moving to FL! :) Small world!

Try stain extinguisher from Chem dry. It is a well known product .At one time Home depot carried this but not sure now. Check Home Depot.com or amazon. It truly works if you follow all the directions.

When it is hot out, take it out side under the porch and hose it down. Dump a few buckets of soapy warm water. Hose it down again, then take a bar of Ivory soap (white bar) and rub a little on dirt smudge and rub gently. Hose down good, and at this point, pour fabric softener and water all over and hose again. Let the wood dry out good, a week maybe? It will be as good as new.

Hi there, I have also used Tide and I have used "Resolve Gold Laundry Stain Remover". I would spray this, let it sit for a few minutes then wipe it with a clean cloth. Enjoy the couch!

As business owners, my husband and I have run a company for 12 years cleaning oriental rugs, carpets, upholstery and fine textiles. There's no way to correctly answer this question without knowing what fabric is on the settee. If you take the wrong advice because it seems right or easiest, it could actually damage the entire piece. If you value your new freebie, I'd suggest you pay a professional to clean it so it will last. (As an example, we charge $65 for this size piece. Scotchguard or a Teflon protectant might be a consideration, too, if you've got kids or pets.) Hope that helps!

@Babs Thanks so much - it was stored in a warehouse for years; it really just has very minor dirt marks here and there I was hoping to get out. Not sure about the fabric, though...I'm still deciding on how I want to recover it, but I'd at least like it clean for now. YES to pets -- I covered it with a large sheet last night and one of our dogs immediately jumped on and claimed it as her own! LOL Thanks so much for the tips and the price of what you would charge - it gives me a starting point!

There is a product called Spot Shot in an aerosol can. Will take about anything out of fabric or carpets. I couldn't live without it! Clear liquid, Not water based so it dries quickly.
  • ..I have used ( for years ) ...a product called FOLEX, it used to be available only to the ' cleaning trade" , till around 1999. Then it could be purchased at Lowe's , etc. Its a spot cleaner for all kinds of fabric, but can be used in a steam cleaning machine for rugs/ upholstery and such. It can be used undiluted or diluted, and its no rinse and non toxic. Also biodegradable. I love this product , it works so wonderfully.

I have found that the best way to clean fabric upostry to be first a good vacuuming then a spot cleaning with peroxide. Cheap and eco friendly.
