This apartment was designed for clients that used it as their home away from home in a large Mid-western city.

We were all very pleased with the results. The original design of the place was more streamline modern but the clients wanted it a bit more traditional.

Now this is always the hard part of design and why I am not a designer (well okay, I concede there are many many reasons that I am not a designer and I appreciate those who are). It looks great to me but it is so far from my personal tastes that when I look at something like that I just want to go "bleeeh". Nothing at all to do with your designs. For those who like this style, I am sure it is spectacular. I like some of the greenery and the wood floors. I have learned to appreciate the ...»
work you have put into it, the obvious care and selection and making things fit but in the back of my mind, there is still that noise. How do designers do it if it is not their style or do designers have to factor that "I have to design within my general range of tastes" into the jobs they take?

Any good designer should be able to design in most styles, that is why you work with a designer that is trained and educated on many different styles. We all have a personal style but most designers can design in the style that the client desires and not impose our particular taste on the project. There are also clients with questionable taste and we either try to make their wishes look amazing or in some cases when what a client wants is not right at all it may be in our best interest to ...»
excuse ourselves from the project altogether.

This particular client was very happy with the project, this is my goal as a designer, to have a happy client at the end of a job and in most cases new friends in the process.

The design shown here may not be to your taste or style which is perfectly fine, when we are hired by you for a project we will do our homework to determine what your style may be and do our very best to make your style shine through in the finished projects.

Kevin- good designers ask a lot of questions and also have to balance budget and style as well. It is definitely an art form that does not get a lot of credit. It takes years of experience and cannot be learned by watching the DIY channel alone.

Kevin - also if you are looking to hire a designer. Ask to see a portfolio, you can find someone who's worked within your specific style and can help you refine your wants and ideas into the design you'll be happy to have.

I thought designers were creative people; not just someone with an idea of what my house should look like based on their likes/dislikes. Seems to me many designers on hometalk can produce different looks based on the (right or wrong client ideas). That's good.

It should always be about making the clients style shine, there are people that will work with a designer because of a particular look the designer is known for but even then the designs should be tailored to the clients desires and needs.

As a designer I have worked on many homes that I may not want to live in as they are not my style but a happy client at the end of the project is my reward. I have had many clients that we have ...»

worked with on several projects for their homes, offices and hotels and all of the projects have their own character.

It is the art of creating something beautiful from a blank canvas that is the fun part of being a designer.
