Memories of Christmas ornaments made using a baloon

I cannot remember entirely but my Mama used to use balloons and embroidery. She would wrap it in lace and then used some kind of sugar water type mix and let it dry. Then she would pop the balloon and you had a delicate ornament. Can I get any ideas? She could have maybe dipped the string in the sugar water mixture and wrapped the balloon, then when dry popped the balloon. Just memories. I was hoping someone else remembered them.

There is a product called Stiffy that I use for stiffening crocheted ornament. I have also seen watered down white glue. Sugar water stopped being popular due to insects.

The product is Stiffy. You can buy it at any craft store. Wet your lace or yarn with it, then wrap it around a blown up balloon. Let it dry for a day or two then pop the balloon and you will have your ornament. I make Easter baskets like this. I leave an oval shape in the front of the balloon for the opening. I place something heavy such as a bag of pebbles on the bottom of the basket and cover it with Easter grass.

    Would Mod Podge work too?

Any white glue and water will work too. I made easter baskets for my kids one year but wrapping huge balloons and then cutting out an oval on one side when dry. Filled it with grass and goodies.
