What critter(s) have taken refuge under our strawberries?

Any guesses? This is in a small garden in the middle of a preschool/daycare center's playground. Children occupy the area throughout the day until around 6pm. I noticed the hole yesterday, and check the garden frequently, so I suppose it was created over the weekend when no people were around. A 7-8ft chain link fence surrounds the area. I have seen a rabbit inside the playground once 4 years ago, and that was before we had any veggies to munch. Our broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage managed to over winter, but no signs of nibbling.
My 'uneducated' guess would be chipmunks, rabbits, or mice...rats? We have many pine trees around the outside perimeter of the playground, maybe 25 yards from the garden.
Being a teacher, I would love to use this as an opportunity to observe nature in action...but at the same time, want to make sure it is safe and won't bring too much harm to the garden.
Thanks!
