The salt can ruin underwater lighting systems, pool liners, and even the overall masonry work done in the pool.

I have installed 3 in the last 2 years and the homeowners haven't had any complaints. We used pebbletech stone inside and stainless light fixtures to prevent the high corrosion associated with salt. I think the general logic is less maintenance and more green. No chemicals are needed.

They seem to become more popular these days. Yet, Louisiana and parts of Australia have outlawed them because of salinification of wetlands. Downsides are initial cost of the system, maintenance, and the cost of replacement cells. Salt is a corrosive; it will damage some metals and some improperly sealed stone. Pool equipment manufacturers will not warranty stainless steel products damaged by saline pools. Personally, I can open my eyes underwater in a chlorinated pool, not so sure about a saltwater pool.

@Superior Pools/ Why are they wonderful? is it because the water is less salty, is it a cost factor? What advantages does a salt water pool have to a traditional pool?

In terms of maintenace does it compare to a traditional pool?

    Salt versuse Chlorine

Salt water pools have the same effect to chlorine when desolation of pool. The salt Genorator produces natural chlorine, that does not burn the eyes or turn your hair green and ruin bathing suits. When swimming in a Salt water pool you don't taste the salt or smell and you can open your eyes under water. ...»

As to Chlorine it does the opposite of Salt and that is why I'm pro Salt.

    And Salt is more eco-friendly.

American Medical Assoc. Came out with a report in 2008 that after swimming in a salt water pool for 8 min you will have exceded you recommended daliy dose of sodium. And we all know that high intake of sodium contributes to heart disease.

Only item that someone warned me about upgrading is that I have a pool heater 15 years old. Depends what the heater is made of if the Salt would hurt it. New heaters are titanium and that would be fine with Salt.
