Stenciled End Table and a question:

I've been using polycrylic to finish light colored painting projects because I thought it doesn't yellow like polyurethane. However, I've recently heard that it will also yellow over time. Is this right? Anyone have suggestions for something that doesn't yellow?

Painted with primer, then a pretty turquoise paint found in the oops stash at Lowe's.

A stencil added to top in the same turquoise.

Light glaze on the top and dry brush the turquoise on the 2 side boards to tie in with the stencil. Finish with polycryilic.

I have had great results with minwax's wiping poly...for lighter use or duty ...natural linseed oil and wax finishes.

Okay Sheila, I am very impressed. If I have a local client who wants a piece painted, do you paint for others?

I have not heard that but prefer Modern Masters because it seems to dry harder. They have a good reputation and are easily available at good paint stores.

Thanks for the info, KMS & Peace- I was panicking a little after using the polycrylic on several projects. I've been using Minwax, will also check out Modern Masters. I've been reluctant to use wax because it doesn't seem like it would be as durable. How often do you need to reapply?

Lee Anne, I would be happy to talk to you about projects you might have. :)

Wax can pose problems with any "future" finishing work. the durability is closely linked to its use...a seldom used side table many go years...heavy use maybe 4 to 6 months

I had the exact same tables and I gave them to my daughter. I don't know how banged up they may be now but I'm going to show her what she can do with them. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for following up, KMS. I love the look of waxed finishes, but think I'll stick with poly's- I like to finish and be done with it. :)

Karen, if your daughter decides to go with stencils, Hobby Lobby has some great ones and often has a 40% off coupon you can use.

At Lowes, it's about 46 bucks a gallon. I don't think it comes in quarts. As you probably know I use wax on almost everything except for table tops where food or beverages will be placed. A gallon is a lot of finish. I wish we could share!

Is it oil or water based? I looked on Lowe's website and I don't see one that says Crystal clear.

Water based. This is gloss but they have it in Satin. http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=...

Lowes Item #: 49702 - Sorry it's not called crystal clear. My mistake.

beautiful job SheliaG! My husband wont' let me paint wood, it has to be stained or clear coated, but I will have to sneak some smaller projects in under his radar now that I've seen your work.

We're replacing the stair treads, after ripping up the nasty carpetin,g and I'm using the Varathane on them I'll round up the pix and post them. 6 coats appears to be the magic number.

just a question.. can the clear coat you're talking about be applied over chalk paint without the wax applied?

This is a perfect example of when furniture should be painted. This is a sturdy piece, not particularly beautiful or valuable and ready to be prettied up and extend its life for years! Great job!

Alyssa I've used polyurethane and polycrylic over chalk paint without any issues. I don't use waxes as a top coat, just because I like the durability of the poly's.
