Upgraded Kingsize Headboard

I wanted to give my old headboard more of a WOW factor. I increased the height and upholstered it.
AFTER
I began with this wooden headboard from Mexico. It suited my rustic country home but tastes change, and I love to have a project.
BEFORE
The old headboard is fine but it doesn't say much. I wanted to dress it up a bit.
I hauled the old wooden headboard out to the porch and decided what I could do to it. I actually created so much extra work for myself. It would have been much simpler to start from scratch. I placed a 2x4 between the bottom of the legs and covered the entire thing with plywood. Final size was 48'x 80".
I covered the plywood with a foam convoluted mattress pad (cost$39) and wrapped it in extra loft poly ($13) stapled on the back. I had upholstery material left from another project. The fabric was not wide enough to cover the headboard if run in vertical stripes so I had to add fabric to each end and I added 1.5" piping ( which I also had) at the seams. It honestly would have been simpler to run the fabric horizontally as I would not have had to get the sewing machine out. Horizontal stripes are more contemporary and would have given the room a much wider appearance. My bedroom is very large so I wanted to avoid this.
Hanging the headboard
The finished headboard was very heavy and I wanted it hung on the wall. I cut two cleats, from 2x4, and hung them top and bottom. (I should have raised them higher as about a foot of the headboard is below the mattress level) The cleats make the headboard very stable which is great for sitting in bed reading and watching TV. All in all I learned a great deal with this project, primarily, do my homework first.
