Rustic Industrial Ikea Hack Bookcase

Recently I realized that my 17 year old son was really lacking storage and functionality in his room. Sports equipment, bags and memorabilia were everywhere, the tiny bureau we bought for him when he was a toddler was spilling over with his adult-sized clothes, and he kept losing things in his own room because the space was such a mess. I set out to improve this situation with the hope that a more organized space would help him focus more on his studies. As part of the room redesign I built a custom-sized bookcase very inexpensively, and now he has a landing place for things that are special to him along with trophies, school supplies and college brochures. See how I turned 2 metal shelving units into a customized wall of storage here: http://www.shineyourlightblog.com/2016/02/ikea-hack-bookcase.html

Kia ora! Firstly what a fantastic idea, after seeing your post I have decided to make a few sets of these for myself. I was just wondering if you have had any problems with the paint peeling at all? I've read that painting galvanised metal without proper preparation will just cause the paint to peel and not stick properly and that you need to wipe it down with an ammonia solution first, then prime, sand and paint. Just wanted to see how your shelves have faired over time? Thanks!

Hi, I seached for this project! I love the idea! I notice the link doesn't work in your post. They don't show the whole post when you do a search. Just an FYI.
