Vintage Easter Postcard Sign Using Fusion Transfer Gel #DIYMySpring

Any laser printed image can be transferred to wood or canvas using Fusion Mineral Paint Transfer Gel. I like transferring images more than using decoupage because with a transfer, you see the texture of the underneath surface showing through the picture. My favorite technique is to transfer an image to wood.
Here is my image for this project, which I reversed and blew up on my computer. I had some scrap wood in my garage I decided to use for my sign. To brighten it up, I painted the piece of wood with a base coat of white paint.
I tear off the extra paper on my transfer image. Tearing, rather than cutting, helps the edge of the picture blend more onto the surface. Once my white paint was dry, the next step was to paint on Fusion's Transfer Gel using a foam brush. You want to get about dime's thickness onto the surface.
Flipping over the image, press it onto the gel face-down. Then very gently, work out any bubbles or extra gel.
At this point, it's time to set your project aside for at least 24 hours to let it dry and to give the Gel time to work. After it was dry, using a washcloth I wetted down the paper thoroughly.
Once the paper is soaked through, start gently rubbing with your fingers to remove the top layer of paper. Be careful not to rub too hard so you don't rub all the way down through the transfer!
I had to work through this step 3 or 4 times: wetting the image, rubbing off paper, then setting it aside to dry. Letting it dry is helpful because you can see areas where there is still more paper to take off. Be patient, and keep working the image very gently until you get almost all of the excess paper off.
You will still see some paper haze on you image, but you can easily take care of that by rubbing on some paste furniture wax. You can see how it really brings the image to life! Once you've applied the wax to your image, you're finished with the transfer! I decided to embellish mine a bit more with a light sanding to distress the edges.
I also wanted to paint on a few accents using Fusion Mineral Paint metallics.
A little bronze and gold on the angel's robe, and some pearl on her wings really enhanced the photo.
Here it is all finished, hanging by some pretty, thick satin ribbon. You can see the metallics twinkling a little in the light :)
You can repeat this process using any laser-printed image you like! The possibilities really are endless. To see more photos of this project and more about Fusion's Transfer Gel and other products, please visit my blog. Thank you and Happy Easter!
