Janet Pizaro on Mar 09, 2016For the inside steel door use a good primer such as zinser or kiltz. Double check for the usage on a steel door. I would choose the Marquee line from Behr. The paint is excellent and gives great coverage. As for outside you will do the same except the primer and paint has to state for outdoors. The trim will depend on what you are painting the walls in and your preference of keeping it natural, white or the color of the wall.Helpful Reply

Beth H. Makemeprettyagain.blogspot on Mar 09, 2016oil based primer for the raw wood and then a glossy wood trim exterior paint. Is the door pre-primed? Usually they come that way. If not, what Janet said above. The only difference is I like Ben Moore Advance paint. Also do a glossy finish, at least outside. Glossy paint holds up to the elements better than flat or satin. Ditto for oil base.Helpful Reply

R Walter on Mar 10, 2016When in doubt always prime the surface, the primer can will tell you if you can use oil or water based paint on top.Helpful Reply

Beth H. Makemeprettyagain.blogspot on Mar 10, 2016No you don't. water based can go over oil, but oil can't go over water base! Just get a good exterior paint. I'm doing the same with my wood doors and was told by a pro to use a good primer and a few coats of glossy paint. glossy repels the weather better. Yours are metal so you should be fine.Helpful Reply

Scott on Mar 14, 2016You will need a shellac based primer to seal the knots on the pine. Zinzer is a brand. Clean up with ammonia instead of mineral spirits. An alternative is to just apply shellac over the knots, then prime with the usual primers as suggested in other comments. If you dont seal the knots, they will eventually bleed thru, even with an oil based primer.Helpful Reply
