An Inexpensive Yard Sale Find Goes Gorgeous

Sometimes the right piece just falls into your hands when you least expect it, and this vintage settee was found very inexpensively at a yard sale. The thought of painting and reupholstering can be daunting, but it's not as difficult as you might think!
Come and see how I did it over on the blog.
Come and see how I did it over on the blog.
The sofa in the back of our pick up truck just after finding it at the yard sale. As you can see the fabric had been removed by the previous owner, but the foam was still in good condition.
The first thing that I did was to vacuum the foam and carefully paint on a coat of primer paint. I'm a bit old school in that I prefer either house paint or spray paint over the chalk based formulas.
After painting the frame with several layers and antiquing wax I felt that the wood had the antique look that I was going for. I have more about the painting techniques and products for you over on my blog post.
Unfortunately the previous owner had torn the fabric off, which normally I would do myself and use it for a pattern to cut the new fabric. After studying briefly how I could best replicate the upholstering that was there I figured out how it must have been done and used quilt batting to create a pattern. Fabric was cut and stapled once all of the old nails were removed.
The stapling is the most time consuming part of an upholstery project like this one, and it definitely helped having two people to tackle this. I stretched and smoothed the fabric while my husband did the stapling.
My own home is decorated in a French elegant style and I love how this settee looks in my home office! It is covered in a white denim and I'll be tossing a dog blanket over the seat when my pups are all in here hanging out.
