What color for the bottom to be more clear.

You can never go wrong with white.

There is a painted antique dresser post on HomeTalk posted shortly before your post using a Martha Stewart Thistle Blue paint which I think would look nice on the bottom half of the table. It may bring out more detail than the white.

I will check it out Kimberly. Thanks

I think black would look classy.

Since you want to leave the top as is I'd go with something on the light side. The color will also depend on what the colors are in the room you will be using it in. Cream, white, very pale green, are some of the colors that I would consider. I do think a very bold red DYI chalk paint with a dark wax would look wonderful too.

I buy, repair, paint then sell them so the color I was looking for is what is popular right now. I must admit I just painted a Sunday School Child's chair red and it look's great.

If you go by popular colors and you live in Florida, then a cream, turquoise, or a tropical color like a mango shade distressed a little would be great.

I haven't looked at the Mango Shade selection and just finished some turquoise that came out nice.

The new "trendy" color right now is shades of orange. From very bright slick orange which would go with modern or art deco, to soft pastel oranges that would go with shabby chic, country or even French. Get some paint chips and see what colors go best with the wood before you decide on any color. And like some of the others mentioned black or white go with anything, but it seems like right now color sells. Good luck with what ever you choose and be sure to post before and after pictures.

I'm planning on painting a mahogany table I just bought in Antique Gray and then sanding it down a bit so the mahogany shows through.

Being in Florida really doesn't make a whole lot of difference as to what color you choose as far as resale. However details of the piece and how to bring them to life does. If it were mine, I'd go with a chalkpaint seablue green. To me this would embrace the piece and the wood that is being left to shine. Can't wait to see the finished project!

@Sia@South 47th The only reason I mentioned Florida when I was talking about colors is, from my experience when living is a warmer climate people tend to decorate with fun tropical colors. If you live in the north east area or colder areas people use warmer colors.

I think I agree with the people suggesting neutral, which doesn't mean white, but like a cream, pearly white, charcoal grey etc. You could also go with some antique gold or green or blue colours. If it is for resale, you don't want to go too far out there that people won't consider it unless it is an accent colour they are looking for. Thanks for posting and please post a pic of the finished product.

@Mary I. No worries luv! It's just that I've been in the business and it's been at times hard to unload something with a 'trendy' color in a hurry. Great suggestions you have though and I can't wait to see the color he chooses!! xo

That is a pretty little table! I like to look around at similar objects and see what looks good. Im not the most creative and need inspiration from time to time.

I would leave both top and bottom shelf natural simply put a satin water resistant varnish on them and paint the legs black. It would look great and I have seen tables done like this before and they look wonderful.

Black legs might be a thought.

I saw a table today with the top painted Paris Gray so I may change my mind. I have 2 more pieces too do before I get to the table.

In s FLI see a lot of peach and 'seafoam green'.post photos when you've painted it!
  • I would go with a beach theme, because of the location, powder blue, nautical rope, seashells, mason jar with sand and shells on top.

Apopka isn't near the beach, though. I have a table that I stained the top Kona, which is a nice dark brown stain, then I painted the legs with Duck Egg Blue chalk paint. Are you looking to sell it or are you wanting to keep this in your home? How have you decorated the rest of the area if you plan to keep it in, if you're going to keep it? I always go off of the other things I already have in that room that I know I don't want to change. (I'm from Clermont, lived in Apopka shortly, now stationed in WA state, I miss home :) )

We are 45 miles from Daytona and a lot of people have condos over their.

Black would look really good with that color wood, but I would only do it in eggshell not too glossy.

I just did two tables, made the top Bombay mahogany with a light clear wax and painted everything else a chalk paint called "Conch Chowder" and I think it looks great

My thoughts...if you keep the same stain color on top, I would go with black chalk on the legs. However if you stained the horizontal surfaces more of an expresso, I would go with a cream colored chalk paint like straw.

I have an almost identical one with beautiful wood grain. I would only stain, whatever color works for you, paint would cover up the grain.

I did one very similar to this one. I left the top stained and then painted the rest two different shades of paint: Annie Sloan Old White and Carli Cuckseys Azurite Blue. Then I dark glazed the entire piece to highlight the details.
