Slab insulation can be installed using foam board rigid insulation directly against the footing and the exterior of the slab. The theory is per manufacturer: "Even if the foundation walls under the slab are insulated, that will not help much if the slab edge close to the outside air isn't also insulated. ...Slab insulation uses a rigid insulation material: typically foam boards. The installation is easy: just apply the right product with the right r-value under the face of the slab." OK. I'm easy.

I know of no insulation for placing on top of slab. I have placed it under freezer slabs but never on top. Poured Concretes R value is 0.08 per inch. You may be thinking of side walls.

You said to install under the face of the slab. My slab is exposed (above the ground and below the vinyl siding. Please explain further...also part of your text collapse at the end. Thank you.
  • Styrofoam insulation on those exposed area was code at one time, however; in Ga. the termites found it very cozy and tastey so it is no longer used. Try caulking between the top of slab and bottom wall plate to seal out air.

I've install rigid foam on top of basement slabs, using PT sleepers and ply, prior to installing hardwood..I'm assuming your working inside?

If it's the joint between the slab and foundation the best thing is to remove the siding and patch this area with concrete. Also KMS has a great Idea about insulating the floor...
