Has anyone lowered a floor in their home?

I have a one story home that has multiple levels and I want to change it! You walk in one level that has the dining area and kitchen on the same level, to get to the living room you would take one step down and to get to the bedrooms you would take two steps up into a hallway! I hate it and need any advice from anyone else that has tackled something similar. Maybe a sunken living room update? The only problem is that I don't want to raise the living room and lose any of the vaulted ceiling space (plus there is a large, rock fireplace that would look awkward).

I understand you love the high ceiling, but the higher floors most likely have all the underpinnings (straight to the ground) to hold the floors. This would not seem to be a DIY unless you are builders!

Thank You Pat Russell maybe I'm dreaming. I'm planning on hiring an architect/designer (someone that's both) to hopefully come up with a solution to this if I can't come up with one on my own. I feel like lowering the raised area might be easier and would make my entry, dining and kitchen taller as an added bonus.

Pat is correct. It's easier to raise a floor than lowering a floor. It's a structural endeavor. This would involve engineers, qualified builders, and permits that may not even be issued. Don't know the layout, but I would raise the living room floor and leave a sunken sitting area around the fireplace.

Thank You William. I guess I was just wanting to see if someone had done it before to give me hope! I know it wouldn't be easy..... I appreciate your input.

When we added to the house, one floor was higher. Beefed up the floor joists and supported the new joists. Then cut down to the new joists. There!

I am a Licensed contractor and this is not a simple job raising would be much easier
  • Agree with all that say raising would be much easier and more cost effective, (but not cheap) than the lowering of floors.
