Thrifted Farm Table Makeover

I found this 90's honey pine table at my local Goodwill for just $30. I loved the size and the shape, but the orange color? Not so much. And, the top had been beaten to a pulp in an apparent attempt to "distress" it. This before photo shows how the table looked after I had filled some of the more major distressing on the top.
Given the amount of distressing, this table was never going to have a perfectly smooth finish. So, I decided to go with a lightly distressed look for the makeover. Here it is all finished in my kitchen/dining room.
After filling the deep imperfections, I sanded the entire table and gave it a good scrubbing. There was also quite a bit of crud on it. I then primed and painted it with General Finishes antique white milk paint.
After painting, I lightly distressed the areas where it would naturally have become worn over time. I then sealed it with several coats of General Finishes High Performance top coat in flat.
As a finishing touch, I added a new knob to the pretty drawer on the end. For more details and photos, I would love for you to check out my blog.

I have an oak/oak veneer coffee table that has much damage on the top. I'd like to know if I could refinish it on my own, or take it somewhere to have it done?

Is the top coat safe for a dining table? I'm trying to figure out how to paint and seal a dining table so it would be safe for our family to eat off of... I mean, we use plates, but my toddlers aren't always relaible to not chew on the table!
