How to clean and preserve that aged chipped paint on wood?

I've come across some of that really 'nice' wood that has been painted and is now chipped and wonderful!!  But how do you clean it without knocking off the chipping, and then preserve it? Thanks!!

Hi! Here is the method I've used for years from being in the Antique/Collectable World. I use a cotton cloth with nothing on it, unless the piece is really dirty. Yours doesn't sound like it is. So..Wipe with the cotton cloth, reaching every section. Then use a VERY VERY fine steel wool and GENTLY go over the entire piece. Wipe again with the cotton cloth. Then apply BriWax. It's a natural product that doesn't 'yellow'. It comes in a variety of tints. Once you've applied the BriWax, then buff with a cotton cloth. Your piece will still have that 'Chippy' paint, and it will feel like silk! Here is the link to their site: http://www.briwax.com/index.html
