Looking for ideas for my backyard space.
This is the area where I would like to put bbq area located in the back of yard
This is a same area different view.
Would a small floating deck under the back area of the house look ok?

a floating deck would be cool.....i would also keep your bbq/ grill closer to the kitchen ....much easier to work from-not as much hauling. i'm not seeing much shade....check with the county extension office for city style trees and where to place for optimal shade coverage. until then.....umbrella or canopy- there are diy canopy instructions on the web.

maybe breakup some of the areas with flower/plant beds..mulch them and use stone borders. I have a HUGE back yard and I did freestyle beds in 3 locations 2 of those being the opposing corners..less grass to mow and breaks up the monotony

You cannot go wrong with fruit trees. Apricots, peaches, nectarines, mandarins, oranges, plums, prunes, mulberry, fig, etc. Nothing beats going outside on a summer morning and picking and eating a lovely, ripe, sweet piece of fruit.

Once you make your decision on the deck, I would make gardens around in various shapes and heights to break up the space. You could start around the fence and then continue in to the rest of the yard. Keep in mind you will want continous color and texture for all season interest.

Add a large birdbath and plant lantana around it. It will soon fill up the bed. When winter kills it, cut back to the ground in Spring & it will come back and bloom all Summer again. You can watch the birds from your floating deck. Don't forget a bird feeder.

@Ethel Lantana will not come back in New York. It is strictly an annual here.

For bbq area I would put down cement pavers as large as the area you want for the barbeque area. Add chairs, table and other accessories. Go with non-decidious plants/shrubs/trees and then you won't be raking up a bunch of leaves in the fall. Vines look good against a fence along with climbing roses. Balance your plants with high and low growing shrubs. Container planting can be effective also in certain areas. Have fun. You have a large area to cover. Leave some large area for grass.

You could go to a place like Lowe's, menards, etc, get some of the plastic round covers for basement Windows full with dirt ,like a scallop around the fence get some pallets and build and build, chairs, table, get old Windows, hang them on fence, the possibility is endless

I think you need professional help. Go to nurseries and get some ideas. If you want to do it just once and permanent, then get all the free ideas you can from the pros or let them draw you a design. I don't think that would cost too much. It would be worth it.

I am not a landscaper so I would consult some professionals regarding those options, but you mentioned a floating deck. I would suggest you consider a decorative patio. Either a paver, permanent stone, or decorative concrete. Having cared for many decks in my lifetime I have concluded that if the option of a ground patio exists it is much less hassle and in the long run less expensive.
