5 Easy DIY Seed Starter Cup Ideas

5 Minutes
Easy
Don't toss out your toilet paper tubes, K-cups or eggshells. They are all easily turned into inexpensive seed starter cups.
You can buy commercial seed starter cups to get seedlings planted indoors, or you can look around your house for some simple items you would like just throw away otherwise.
Eggshells, egg cartons, toilet tissue tubes and newspaper all make great repurposed seed starter cups.
Fill eggshells or the cartons themselves with potting soil, plant a few seeds in each, and you're good to go.
It's almost as if K-cups were invented to be used to start seeds once you've brewed your coffee. Just rinse out the grinds and fill them with potting soil. They even already have a drainage hole in the bottom!
Toilet tissue tubes or paper towel rolls make excellent starter cups, but take a bit more preparation.
Sheets of newspaper are easy to craft into larger seed starter cups.
Look around your house to see what you can use to make your own seed starter cups. And read my entire article including step-by-step instructions on making toilet tissue tube and newspaper cups below.

I thought about using newspaper to make containers to start seedlings and then wondered how I would water it without the newspaper getting soggy or falling apart. Have you actually used newspaper to sprout with success and no mess?

Instead of throwing out the grounds from the K-cups couldn't you mix those in with your potting soil?

I crush the eggshells and mix them with the coffee grounds and add to my garden. The plants love it and the flowers on them are huge when they bloom.
