Ant hills everywhere!

We recently had our backyard graded after building an addition to our house. We plan to put down sod in the next month (once we can get rid of some of the rocks and roots that are now showing up). In the last few weeks, there are ant hills appearing daily. Many ant hills. What is the best way to get rid of them at this stage? Would a liquid spray work better than a granular bait? I am going to use a barrier treatment around the house, but feel I need to do something on the hills themselves. All the rain we are having isn't helping matters, either.

  • Sounds like you stirred them up with the excavation. There just cleaning up and trying to get out from under all that soil. If you're trying to get them away from the house, I would use some kind of ant dust or pellets. They take that back in the tunnels for the others to feed on.

If you can find my post on ants...I made a simple suggestion on spraying ants in kitchen with window cleaner (really works) and got WONDERFUL responses on all sorts of ant solutions! The responses are so good I am going to clip my own post so I won't lose them! I am not really familiar with getting around on this site, so you may have to look under gardening to find this.

These are mostly the black ants and some of the larger black ants. I haven't seen fire ants, yet, but keep looking for them to show up! I will look for your post Jeanette S. I did get Windex yesterday since I read that on here somewhere.
