Recyled Materials Chicken Pen/Home

If you have contemplated urban style homesteading and raising chickens you will want to see what this couple used to build a chicken house/pen for almost free.
When we retired a couple years ago we didn't know exactly what we wanted to do, but moving from the city was the first thing. We are both from a small Texas town and still had roots there so it seemed an obvious choice. Once we moved to a 3.5 acre plot on the outskirts of our small town hubs set to work making a small homestead using materials on hand as much as possible.
This chicken house/pen was almost free! There are old wood boards, fence panels, bricks, cinder blocks, flower bed borders and even some grating salvaged from projects over many years upcycled and recyled into this chicken dwelling. Bamboo was plucked from a garden area, dried and woven into the wire fencing to block our fierce winds and to provide a bit of south exposure sun block during our brutal summers.
We were hoping to get some grown chickens from a friend who wanted to downsize his brood but the hard winter we experienced this year did that for him. So the baby chicks are starting to arrive in our local General Store and hubs has his eye on some Rhode Island Reds. Hubs made a clutch holder with yet more items we had on hand. I think his water feeder is pretty smart. If you'd like to see more come over to For What It's Worth-Jeannie and take a look around. http://www.forwhatitsworthjeannie.com/
