It took some digging to find this, Theresa, but the Missouri Department of Conservation recommends Peredovick, a sunflower that is a high-yielding, late-maturing, small, black-seeded variety with a high oil content. It is an open-pollinated variety developed in Russia. If you can't find the seed locally, it is pretty widely available from online sources.

Douglas, do you know if these will reseed themselves for next year, if left out in the garden for the winter birds to eat?

Some will reseed themselves but realistically you will need to replant because you will have fewer in most cases. I just take some of the heads off the plants and dry them between sheets of mesh once dry you can take the seeds out over the winter. I kept lots so during the winter I also put some of the heads out for the bird.

Hi! I don't know the answer to your question, but I do want to give you an idea. When I plant sunflowers, I do it in stages. I plant seeds about every 10 to 14 days. That way they don't peak and decline at the same time. It extends the growing season.

You did not say what you want the sunflower seeds for. I plant about 7-10 different kinds. Mostly mine are for the birds and last year I actually took a survey based on the sunflower heads to see which the birds liked best and it was not the big heads. The favorite was sunflowers that the plant is more like a bush and has lots of limbs with sunflower heads that are about the size of a child's fist. Each plant probably had 25-50 minimum flowers on them. Additionally there are so many different colors to choose from to make it truly beautiful. I have about a 20x30 area that I plant plus a long row all along the side of the garden which is probably another 30-40 feet long on top of the 20'

Get a bunch of different kinds. The seed packets are cheap enough, and different varieties would be interesting.
