No prep, sanding, priming, or sealing needed; environmentally friendly with very low VOC's and virtually no odor; high pigment concentrate so a little goes a very long way; will paint over just about any surface including wood, plastic, tile, metal, glass, and fabrics, even furniture that has previously been sealed with wax.

Chalk paint is of personal taste. Some think no prep others say prep. It all about the look you are trying to achieve.

Four things: 1) No prep. Just wipe with damp cloth and you're done. If there are rough spots, I generally hit them with a bit of sandpaper and move on. 2) Because of consistency, You can blend the colors to make it into any color you want. MUCH easier than regular paint. Quick drying time so do this in a container you can SEAL after mixing the color. 3) Once coated as you prefer, dries quickly and you can either varnish or wax. Your choice. Wears well 4) EASY CLEAN UP. Doesn't damage your brushes like other paint does and just wash them out well and they will last a LONG time. Takes no time at all to clean up from chalk painting. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I'VE DONE IT ALL. THIS IS THE EASIEST.

Because you can wipe it off and reuse it over and over the area, let's say you have kids, get a piece of wood maybe clearance paint it, put it in their room etc, the possibilities are endless

I love the texture of chalk paint. When it's waxed, it takes on a velvety feel. Lightly sanding before waxing gives a smooth surface. You can wax with clear, dark or white wax, depending on the look you're going for. I'm currently very into the white wax, especially over blues and greens-it gives a very beachy, sun bleached look.

Chalk paint provides ease and speed. No prep except wiping down, the chalk paint goes on easy and covers well and leaves so many options for finish. Crackle, shabby chic, rustic or just leave for a "like new" look. It dries quickly and is a real time saver.

Little to no prep, and it works on so many surfaces! Also chalk paint gives a certain "look". You can make your own, as well.
  • Hello CherryAlice! You have gotten some wonderful answers. I also mix my own chalk paint so I save quite a bit over all the name brands. If you use your favorite search engine (or search HomeTalk) you can find many different recipes using latex paint as your "base". Happy painting!! P.S. - Your big box stores (like Home Depot, Lowes, etc., often have "oops" paint you can use and/or tint to your own liking... and they are sold for a very deep discount.

Just finished my first chalk paint project. I now see why it is so popular. It is a dream to use, it goes on so smoothly and covers so nicely. My only problem was with the wax, I didn't get some of the thick places wiped off and they turned a funny color but was able to buff them down well enough. It is important to follow the instructions and keep it thin.
