Flower Gardening: Turning a "dead" area into a southern style courtyard

We have a magnolia tree that was planted by my Grandmother in 1918 when her home was built.. Years of neglect caused the area underneath the tree to become barren. The dirt was impacted, hard and full of roots. This needed serious help. My friend Rob was the labor part of our team. I dreamed up the plans and helped with the planting. We now love to use our side entry. Our courtyard is a big hit with our friends and family

This looks great. I really love the brick walkway. A very clever way to make a simple, inexpensive but attractive path.

Very pretty Debi - makes me want to drop in and have a cup of that coffee while enjoying your courtyard & beautiful wrought iron furniture from your friend. I love the wrought iron planter tool It all has a Victorian feel to it!!

Thank you all for your warm comments. We are so pleased with the way this turned out, especially without spending a lot of money. Being able to repurpose bricks, gravel, furniture and flower pots has really improved the looks of our yard. Mostly its ideas, planning and "elbow grease" to make things happen.

You've done a great job, Christine. And I love that it all takes place under a magnolia your grandmother planted.

GREAT JOB!!! I love it. By the way I have the same chairs. A friend of mine also gave them to me because he moved and couldn't take them to where he was moving to. He did not owned that beautiful planter you have there, though. ENJOY EVERYTHING!!!
