About Me:

I'm a tinkerer... there's nothing, really, that I won't take apart and try to put back together! In 2006 my wife and I bought a 1974 home that (I thought) just needed some cosmetic enhancements. Turns out that was way wrong! By the time we're done, almost every room in the house will get some kind of renovation. Stay tuned for all the project updates!

Favorite area of home improvement:

I'm learning it all! So far, I've learned that I can't stand hanging drywall. That includes finishing it! I like doing trim (even if I'm not great at it) because I get to play with saws. I've also really enjoyed electrical!

Gardening: I have this thing growing up through an azelia. I know it has to go, but (esp. @Walter Reeves) what IS it? Anybody?

It looks kind of like a holly of some sort, but the leaves are more broad than any holly I've seen! Also, if you know what it is, just what are those berries going to do? Flower? Change color? Stain my clothes?

  • Before... like the improvised gutter solution? :)
  • The addition was clearly just dug into the hill with no consideration for where the rain would go!

Retaining Walls

When we bought our home Atlanta was "enjoying" one very long drought! Once the rain started coming down, we found it was coming INSIDE, too! The living room and a bonus room were ...»

@Its Really Concrete: YES! Drainage was a constant consideration here. The foundation was ...»
waterproofed, and drainage can carry (I'm no mathematician, but I think my calculations are right) enough water to support a 5"/hour rainfall. If we get more than 5 inches per hour for a sustained period, I might need that pool float you can see in the background!
