Chemist Solutions: DIY Easy, Simple Microwave Cleaner #SpringCleaning

Chemistry Cachet has started a new series on the blog. Chemist solutions to make your life more simple, more easy, more healthy, and better! As a chemist, I am always aware of the chemicals in my daily life especially cleaning supplies.
The last thing you want to add to your microwave is a chemical that may react with heat and give off toxic fumes in your food!
This is a simple solution we always used in a heated chemistry lab to make sure our utensils, hoods, and equipment were clean. And guess what? It works perfect for household uses too!
The key to this microwave cleaner is heating it. It activates the acid in vinegar and produces steam that cleans like a charm.
Ingredients:

Vinegar (Distilled White)

Water

Fresh Lemon

Microwave Safe Bowl
This is the typical vinegar you purchase for most household things, but just make sure it is distilled white, around 5% acidity!

Simply heat this solution for 10 minutes in your microwave. Once done, simple wipe the inside of your microwave out, and it works like a charm every time. I have already had readers write me saying they couldn't believe how easy it was!
