    Forget about the asbestos, what about the missing hartford loop? Old steam boilers such as this explode when filled with cold water if there is no loop. Or is that hidden?

    Glad to here. For those who stumble across this topic I have attached a sketch of what a hartford loop is.

    • Without a hartford loop the boiler can possibly run dry If the other safeties in place fail. This  can result in an explosion. 
This was a very common issue when the steam boilers were first introduced.
