How to Make Low Budget Home Accents!

I love decorating my home with things I pickup here & there, you can add your own special touch & customize to your own taste. I found these plastic shutters at the restore for a dollar. I forgot to take a picture of them before they were painted, but as you can imagine they were gray & ugly!
I started out by painting them with chalk paint in a cream color, two coats.
I bought some wood letters from Hobby Lobby & used Early American stain on them.
I also dry brushed some stain on the shutters to give them a distressed look. Since the shutters were plastic, I couldn't sand, so I just barely dipped my brush in the stain , removed the excess then brushed on in areas that would have normal wear & tear.
I then just simply hot glued the letters on the shutters.
This is what my fireplace mantle looked like before.
And now with the added shutters!
Just a few more pictures showing my dollar shutters!
I always seem more proud of the decor I do myself, rather than spending a ton in high priced items!

You have some very nice answers...I can not improve on them...but what were they thinking when they put the fireplace where they did ...in a corner and almost under a window...it just looks out of place ...no wonder you are having a hard time with it...good luck and show us the update.....
