    I cut them with a sawzall with a metal blade, I clamped them in a vice.

    This is just the project I've been looking for. We found a bunch of railroad spikes on a recent walk and this is exactly what I was trying to wrap my head around accomplishing. Can you tell me what kind of wood did you use, and where did you find rough wood like that?
