More great upcycling project ideas using architectural scraps

Since you guys appreciated the coffee table from an old door that my husband built for me, I thought you'd love to see what he can do with old windows, too! Over the years he has built some seriously cool pieces of furniture and shadowboxes, too. The very first thing he made for me was the window shadowbox to hold my wedding bouquet and bridal portraits. It's one of my most prized possessions.

He used scrap lumber from his grandfather's porch swing to create the red shadowboxes. I painted the red table and distressed it to look old. We make a pretty good team! :)

He doesn't use any plans to build things, but another Hometalker asked for plans for his tables in the coffee table post, so here is a little tutorial I wrote on how he created the hinged window shadowbox table: http://unskinnyboppy.blogspot.com/2008/09/tu...

Thanks for the creative idea. I have an old exterior door that we just decided to replace. I really like the door, so now I have options of what to do with it!

Those look sooo good! So much more interesting than an ordinary coffee table or store bought shadow boxes. I bet you have a lot of other creations too!

I'm assuming he uses the original glass. I am wondering about safety around children and pets. Have you had any such issues? Is it as fragile as it looks?

Christopher- yes, it's the original glass. It's withstood the weight of photo frames and vases just fine but I don't trust it around my 4 year old son, so I can't attest to the safety factor since it's not anywhere near him! :) I'd say no.

Anita I have found them all over the place. We got a few at antique stores in Florida and mostly around home at Antique stores in Bham area. I go to The Blue Building in Alabaster a lot.

Love these ideas and I just found someone with old windows for $10 a piece!! Woo-hoo!!! Is the Blue Building an architectural salvage by any chance?

Yay! Great find, Julie! The Blue Building is part antique mall, part interior consignment, part salvage! Hard to pinpoint what they are. They have all sorts of stuff in there!

Love the use of "old" stuff to make new....I have a very old part of a double hung window, wooden frame, flower decal,,,and I've turned it into a mirror using Krylon's Looking Glass spray. Amazing look!

Love the stuff you do. I love looking at all the different things you crafters do. I have used a few of your Ideas to use in my apartment. I have been fighting Cancer Breast, Fibermyaliga, RA, Various health problems. But I love checking things out and do a little dabbing when I feel good. Thanks Crafty Farmer
