Does this frame work with this picture?

I inherited this print, already in this ornate frame. Does this work, or any ideas on revamping the frame? Or should I reframe?

It's a gorgeous frame. Unless you really don't care for it, I'd suggest enjoying it as is.

The frame is beautiful! The scroll work forces the eye to focus on the subtleties of the picture. Are there any labels, marks, or writings on the back of the picture or frame. There have been instances where a picture frame has more value than the picture itself. Many people look at famous artists for value, not realizing there were many famous picture frame makers also. Doing some research may provide a surprise.

Do you live in rangiora New Zealand? Lol. That gazebo looks familiar. Anyways, back to the frame. Gonna be honest. It's not my style. But suits the genre of the art. Could you imagine that painting in a boring thin black frame? It wouldn't look anywhere near what it does in the fanciful frame. However it really depends on what you like and how it fits in your space. All the best.

I'd do some investigating. See if it IS the original frame in which it came, ( I doubt it is). It's too ornate a frame for such a delicate, garden picture. The 2 are fighting for the spotlight. ~In my opinion. The frames amazing, please save it. Find another home for this lovely garden gazebo..

I'd paint it a darker color so the white of the gazebo would really pop! Great frame, worth saving and using. I personally would not fix the flaws prior to painting--it gives it character.

I'm in the deep South - Georgia. This was not the original frame to the picture. I love the frame, I'm definitely keeping it. thanks for the input everyone!

Luv frame..but try picture in off white..like the gazebo, with a forest green mat. Now your beautiful old frame..put a mirror in it. Two for one.

I have a very similar large frame that was from an old mirror that my grandmother had. The mirror broke and I put a chalkboard panel in it. (Available at Home Depot in the mdf section.) I would use a different vintage frame for the print, maybe a thinner one that is dark wood.

I think the beautiful picture gets lost in this frame. My opinion is the frame is just too heavy looking and takes away from the artwork.

    The frame makes the picture!

A beautiful picture but needs a different frame. Keep the frame and maybe attempt to acquire the type of print that was in it originally if your budget allows or sell it to an antique dealer/collector. I have three of these 22x27-inch frames complete with original prints copyrighted 1899 .

Beautiful print--beautiful frame--but it overwhelms the print!
  • Michicachan999 Michicachan999 on Apr 13, 2016
I totally agree with Linda. The frame steals the show too much and draws the eye away from what's going on with the picture...just too confusing.

I think the frame, being heavy looking, over powers the delicate picture. Both are beautiful, but not together.
  • Aakar Jain Aakar Jain on Apr 14, 2016
The frame and picture both are beautiful, but i don't think they would go perfect together. The frame seems quite heavy and overpowers the picture. You can replace it with some light frame or repaint it to make the picture more appealing and emerging.

thanks everyone. I'm going to seperate the two. I like the ideas of a mirror in the frame and a mat with the print.

Overwhelmed the print. Put the print in something lighter with a Matte and use the frame some where else nearby

That print definitely needs a mat and a frame with cleaner lines. The ornate frame will be nicer with a different painting.

I hung this old frame empty, then added interesting items inside directly on the wall.

This is an architectural print that would have a better look with a more plain modern frame at least two inches in width. I dark would perhaps. The gold frame is more for oil paintings. It could use some sprucing up like a nice gold spray paint, model gold enamel, or gold leafing. Definitely needs a nice colorful oil painting though. You can often find some nice ones at the thrift store. : )

    No. Frame over powers picture!

  • Beth Beth on Mar 06, 2019

I agree with above responses.. The frame is beautiful....how about having a mirror placed in this frame?

  • Michelle Collins Michelle Collins on Mar 07, 2019

Thank you for the new responses! So far I just took it down, we did some renovations so now I will get the print framed in a better suited frame, that goes with current decor, with a mat!
