I did not know that they would survive in our heat and humidity. I had a friend in the San Francisco / Oakland Bay area that grew one in her back yard. If you leave the bud on the plant, it has a beautiful bloom. Under what conditions is it growing , cause I would love to have one or three. -
How exciting, Kitty. Once, when I was traveling in Crete, we had lunch at a small roadside restaurant where the owner went out and cut some artichokes that he turned into a salad for us. Talk about farm to table! -
wow, that's so cool. -
It was trial and error. Our summers are probably nearly identical to yours. First I planted them in the regular veggie garden and they died. The next year, I put them next to the carport where they didn't get afternoon sun and recd less water because of the eave overhang. I've seen them growing in large containers and that's what I'll do w/the seed starts from this year. I think the extended periods of high humidity may be the real killer w/artichokes for those of us in the southeast. ...» -
I think I'll give it a try in a container! Great and thanks. Even if I don't eat any, which I will. I will enjoy the bloom. -
They are beautiful. The do take up a lot of room so I think containers may be the way to go if there is limited space. I was just out trying to prepare the containers for this years artichokes starts but there were fire ants in all 3 pots. Ouch!
