Cabinets Kitchens Painting

How I painted my oak cabinets

Because my kitchen has only one small window, it tends to be very dark. I decided to brighten up the room by painting my cabinets.

I have a step by step process on My Repurposed Life http://www.myrepurposedlife.net/2010/12/how-...

I painted the cabinets about 18 months ago. Not a nick or a scratch anywhere. I really took a lot of precautions to make sure this paint STUCK.

Before, note the one small window that allows very little light in the kitchen due to a patio and a huge tree.

I did a lot of prep work before I started priming.

I used a paint sprayer to primer and paint all of the doors and drawer fronts.

I painted my hinges and installed new knobs instead of the brass colored handles.

I painted our wood kitchen cabinets too and love, love, love them! I just primed and painted. To those who say "How dare you paint wood"..ummmm...let's think about this: houses used to be sided in wood. They were painted! Wood CAN be painted!

There's a saying that goes "Just cuz it's wood, doesn't mean it's good". When it comes to lightening and brightening a small space with dark cabinets, paint is a great way to do this ...»

...especially if you're on a small budget. As an interior decorator I see many homes who's owners want a lighter look but cringe/refuse to paint their old cabinets. I also usually find that it's the men who are afraid to paint wood...sorry guys, but it's true ;-)

If a dark kitchen is your thing, then don't paint the cabinets. If a lighter look is what you're after, paint is your most friendly and inexpensive fix.

    I like your kitchen re-do Gail :-D
