Yard Art

An old bowling ball sitting in storage is what started this project. I covered it with decorative flat sided glass shapes. I used the stand for the bowling ball to hold it in place while working then put the completed project on a plant stand. WoFat, our youngest shar pei, wasn't too thrilled that I put something in "his" play area.

I pick up pennies off the sidewalk or parking lot and glue them to bowling balls. I love copper in the garden. I always have pocket change around. :))

My hubby used to bowl. Allot. He has nineteen extra bowling balls that he recently said he was ready to get rid of. I mentioned doing this and he doesn't like the idea, but I'm going to do one to place in our garden and see what he thinks. :^D

OH MAN!! First of all Becky, ya just gotta keep quiet about your plans sometimes girl!! Men can NEVER envision what we're talkin about when it comes to creative things. WHAT wouldn't I give for a couple of those - and he has 19!!! Good grief!!

LOL @ Susan. Hey, I'm not the one that bought them. I have one and only one bowling ball. My parents bought it for my tenth Christmas. Still fits my fingers too! Well it did last time I bowled that is.

But the question is Becky . . .when was the last time you bowled? So just how expensive do you think it would be to mail a couple of bowling balls from NE to VA??

LOL wellllll..... now that you mention it, it has been awhile since I last bowled. Like fifteen years at least? Or there abouts.

My hubby's balls weigh sixteen pounds each. Uuuuu... I mean his "bowling" balls weigh sixteen pounds each. So I think you'll find a better deal checking local thrift stores or CL.

Well . . . . .sure am glad you made THAT perfectly clear!! LOL. Yeah, I figured the BOWLING BALLS weren't light weight!! So why do you have to live soooo far from me???

Probably the same reason you have to live so far from me. I grew up in the Midwest. The furthest east I've been in Ohio. I'd like to travel more, but don't often get the chance.

What kind of glue did you use? I have some bowling balls that roll around the backyard of my bar, I noticed they are cracking from the heat, so I'd love to repurpose them into gazing balls,

I used Liquid Nails Craft Glue, Spread a small area with the glue and place marbles on the glue, dries fairly quick. I tried putting the glue onto the marbles, takes way too much time. I put on plastic gloves and spread it that way. One lady told me she used wooden popsicle sticks to spread it with.

@Becky and Susan..good gravy! I leave town for a week, and you two girls have hurled us into almost censor land! Too funny! I gotta leave it alone, or we will get Miriams' boot!

Ok, Power Grab glue on the cement balls! And spreading an amount and then adding the marbles sounds way easier than what i did! I still have light globes to do, and vases, and cd for spinners, and here I sit, reading reading reading..and not doing.

I lost my bowling ball in the flood of '04 here in the Tri-state area of NY,NJ,PA :( I want to make one of these! I'm glad you mentioned E-6000 because that's what I would have gone with....I love it for mosaics but apparently it's not good on bowling balls.

np Becky...I think it cleaned up nicely ;)

Thank you for a wonderful idea. I have several pedalstels and nothing to put on them. I do have a couple old bowling bowls though. Now I will do this and set them up in my yard..

I made a similar one for a friend a few years back. If you're going to do it you should do a few things first: 1)sand the bowling ball down to scuff it up a little, 2)Fill all the holes with either joint compond or wood putty, 3)Spray paint the bowling ball with plastic primer and then a metalic color of your choice that is specfically made for plastic.
    • Here's the one I made. 1

That is really pretty Kimberly. You brought up some good points about filling in the holes. Hadn't thought about spraying it w/plastic primer & a metallic paint but it makes sense!! I never could find any bowling ball this summer so it's on my someday list!!

Rereading this post...now i am getting the craving to do a ball again. Becky Susan S I had forgotten the comment about the weight of hubs bbballs! Too funny! I have a big light globe I can do, I have so many glass 1/2 marbles (gems)of so many colors in a container of their own, they never got back to the original containers , this would be a good way to get them out ...»
of my hair. I have found you really dont need to scuff bballs, but yes filling the holes is a good idea..or else spiders find them to be cute abodes! I have a glass globe I did a fewYEARS ago, it is outside in the elements, done with E6000 or clear caulking, (cant remember) and it has held up wonderfully! The only thing I do not appreciate is water spotting on the gems. Havent found an answer yet.

Debi M how is yours holdingup, especially with water scale buildup?
