Giving a standard bathroom cabinet a furniture look.

With home values continuing to head in the wrong direction, I didn't want to spend money on a new vanity. Giving our standard vanity a furniture look seemed like a good compromise. I painted the toe kick black to give the illusion of space underneath. Added legs and designed and cut pieces to go between the legs. I like a french country look, but for a modern look, you could simplify the design. http://plumdoodles.com/2012/04/16/giving-a-s...

I have a oak cabinet in our power room and we are replacing the top with granite. But, we can't afford to replace the cabinet. I would like to paint it off white and do a light glaze on it. What are the steps would you suggest to do this and what kind of paint? Thanks!

Not sure if I have already commented on this...but....OUTSTANDING!! I want to sell my husbands house and move to TN and we now have a pedestal sink [hate it!!] and am going to look in junk yards/flea markets for a small stand to make into a sink, just to make it 'livable' for me til I or both of us move! [yea, he wants to stay here! Not me!] so this is awesome!!! Love the black underneath, great idea...maybe you can come to Oswego NY to help ME !!! LOL

Charlene Thompson , I would clean really well with tsp cleaner to remove all oils and dirt, sand lightly & wipe clean with a damp cloth, primer, then paint- probably either an alkyd or oil-based paint. Just be aware that since your cabinet is oak, the grain is probably going to show through, and a glaze will likely highlight the grain. If you don't want the grain showing, you may have to use wood filler over the whole ...»
surface to fill in the grain. It's hard to say for sure without seeing it.

One easier option a lot of people use is chalk paint. No priming or sanding needed- you'd need to topcoat with a clear poly to protect it. Betsy could explain that process better. Betsy, wanna chime in? :)

Charlene Thompson , I primarily use General Finishes milk paint on most of my projects- it would probably work fine with a good clear coat over it.

Thanks, Sheila! I love chalk paint because it requires no sanding and priming before painting! I do clean with Krud Kutter, add two coats of chalk paint and a clear top coat. My cabinets have held up well.
