As kitchen counters are one of the most daily used parts of a home, it boggles my mind why anyone would do it 'cheap'. New countertops can be very affordable installed at a couple hundred bucks up to thousands for high and. But with so many products on the market, some very nice at very low end cost, why 'do it cheap' when it can be professionally done very 'inexpensively'? "Cheap" is a state of mind, not a fact. New laminate tops can be beautiful and very inexpensive, the cost of a couple tank full of gas or your months strarbucks or pizza delivery costs. Not everyone needs 'corinthian leather' or 'tombstone grade marble'.

I vote for concrete. Home Depot has buckets of what I think is called smartcrete ? Or smart concrete. It's 4 gal buckets of powered concrete for around 20 $ a bucket. They also carry boxes of dry concrete dye. Good luck with what you decide to do. :)
