Kitchen overhaul

Thought I'd share photos of our kitchen remodel. It was just completed yesterday.......a 1968 kitchen brought into the 21st century.

Bet you're loving the openness of the new kitchen Becky. Great work; especially like your forethought to add the complementing sideboard!

Bernice, yes, we ridded ourselves of the overhead cabinets and dropped the bar from "bar height" to counter height. Going to counter high translated to having more counter space when baking and cooking........which this "one butt" kitchen seriously needed. Losing the overhead cabinets permits open conversation, light and air flow, which were major improvements. We chose the "arctic white" glass, subway tile. This tile has the "bottle green" glass over the white color. This gave ...»
us the green tint we wished to have compliment the "green marinache" granite counters, without competing with the granite. The effect of the glass tile is like standing by a calm pool of water; it has such great depth, you'd think you could reach into it.

AK Complete, thank you! I also wished to alter the floor plan, but that didn't pan out. To reduce the traffic into the galley kitchen, I felt setting up the bev erage counter (sideboard) would significantly reduce the traffic. So, I'm hoping not only does it serve as additional storage, stretching the kitchen out over additional space, but hopefully, I won't trip over those who wish to have any type of drink.

The wide (and deep) drawers are a real asset! They work wonders for the kitchen storage (pots, roasters, etc.). For the very first time I can get all my silverware into one drawer. I love being organized and able to find and get to things easily.........no avalanches. We finally have a kitchen all can gather around and visit.

Corrie, these photos were taken before my pig chef w/blackboard, ceramic garlic in pink and white, and a few other accessories were added to personalize the kitchen. Not much more will to into the kitchen; I prefer to admire the colors and shapes in the granite, allowing that to take center attraction.

Did the cabinets come from one of the big box stores, or were they custom built. I need the same for my laundry area. Looks GREAT.

Thank you Corrie; we poured over colors, being careful not to overwhelm those in the glass tile or counter top, but to accentuate those, leaving them as the kitchen jewelry/focal points.

Thanks Becky! I'd never seen it before visiting granite warehouses, but when I did, I thought it had such character and wonderful colors. Since then, 2 of my friends remarked that granite was the very one they'd wished to put into their kitchens when they remodeled, but the hubby objected.

I love your new kitchen. It's interesting that you replaced white cabinets with white cabinets - folks tend to go completely opposite of what they had. Mine is dark -would love to go white.

Thank you Ellen! Our issue with our kitchen wasn't the color of our cabinets (as you may have guessed 8-) ); it was storage and work space. However, the old cabinets had been a dark wood when we moved into this home; we painted them once we'd settled in. That end of the house was dark with the overhead cabinets (over the bar) obscuring the light and air flow from the kitchen window and sliding glass doors, so we chose to remove them. Lowering the bar to the kitchen counter height ...»
afforded us more work space, and building floor to ceiling pantry in the laundry room, along with the sideboard, more than offset the loss of storage space when we lost the overhead cabinets. We like light and airy interiors, so hopefully, that's what the kitchen reflects.
