Making Your Own Slip Covers

I've redecorated our family room several times - all with the same pieces of furniture - by making slip covers!
Here is how our room looks today...
Time:
  • making your own slip covers, reupholster
And here is how it used to look...

The couch is the same couch - but simply covered in a slip cover that I made with less than $200 of fabric!

This is our original couch. We love this couch - deep, down filled cushions, solid construction.
I used a heavy, cotton canvasy fabric but you can use whatever fabric you choose. Make sure that it's upholstery or slip cover weight. Most fabric stores can tell you if the fabric you like is appropriate.

And here it is today. This style of couch is very easy to cover with this straight back and loose cushions. Looks just like a brand new couch from Pottery Barn!

Both of the white chairs in this room have also been slip covered.
If you can sew a straight line, you can make a slip cover!

There's not room here on HomeTalk to give you all the detailed instructions that are on my blog.

I recently recovered my couch (an old leather one that was cracked and peeling) I used painter's drop cloths I found at Lowes. I washed them a bunch of times and then dyed them denim with Rit dye. And as they were on sale, I saved a bunch!

I've thought about making slip covers for my sofa out of painting tarps. Have you ever used them?

Lynda - I'd like to know more about the fabric you used. That's exactly how I want my old couch to turn out!
