Why Our Coffee Table Makes Our Kids Happy

I found a $5 coffee table at a thrift store, gave it a coat of paint, and added a hidden surprise for the kids.

Our kids really love to draw and color while we're watching TV as a family but I was tired of cleaning crayon marks off the coffee table even if it was a thrifted find.
Measure the spot for the pilot holes
So we decided to attach a roll of paper to the bottom of the table because I wanted the kids to have a place to be creative, but didn't want to look at it all the time. First we measured the width of the paper roll and marked the table where a set of eye screws would be attached.
Marking the drill bit
To make sure we didn't screw too far into the coffee table so that it came through to the top side, we marked our drill bit to the same length as the threading on our eye screw.
Anchor shackles
After drilling pilot holes and screwing in the eye screws, we attached these weird things to each eye screw. These hold the dowel rod for the paper and are the key to being able to change out the paper roll when it's empty. Which happens often in our house...kind of like in the bathroom.

Sitting by the tv, I needed a place to scribble reminder notes and phone numbers for later. I love it!
