We inherited a kitchen table in sad shape - it's chairs were wobbly, the table top had scratches and the finish (where it still remained) was sticky and yellowed with age. It needed work.
We carefully took apart the entire set, cleaned, stripped, sanded, and stained it.
We weren't able to get out all the of the deep gouges and found the chair backs rather boring, so we chose to stencil. I fell in love with the artwork of Loren at BrownBagStencilCo on Etsy and she custom sized stencils for my project.
For the table top, I just used blue painters tape to make a border design.
We finished with a matte finished water based poly. After that dried, we re-assembled the set and, with the help of a lot of clamps, made sure it's sturdy.
The chair seats were oddly sized, so we custom made cushions. The canvas covers have an envelope closure on the back, so they are easy to wash. We added non-skid strips to the bottom to keep them from sliding around on the chairs.
It was a lot of work, but the table and chairs are beautiful, comfortable, and sturdy now!
Finished Piece: Fully assembled
Finished Piece: Custom cushions
BEFORE: Table top dirty, stained and ugly.
BEFORE: Chairs were yellowed with age, dingy and beat up. Most were incredibly wobbly and reinforced with extra nails and metal L brackets.
DURING: Fully disassembled, we had to keep each chair carefully stacked together.
DURING: Sanding down the pieces of the top.
DURING: every piece seemed to have a different finish on it. Sanding the legs took hours to get the varnish out of those tight details.
DURING: laying out the stencil design
DURING: drying the legs required ingenuity, string, and a couple handy pipes.
