This can be a sticky issue with some contractors. Personally I can go both ways. I actually just helped a neighbor with his bath and basically spent a day showing him the ropes...and providing "consulting" services. His project came out great, though he never thought it would be as much work as it was. Some folks really do not know how involved some projects can be.

If I were the installer, I would not offer a workmanship guarantee unless I was present for every task that was done. And so much of a tile job is done by "feel and experience", I would not allow a helper to do any of the tile install.

I'm not sure it would be worth my time to be an $8.00/hour grunt worker...but if I were a professional installer, that's all the help I'd want.

Usually a recipe for disaster....if you go this route...make certain you have the job spelled out in detail in whatever contract you sign. When we do it this way, we typically perform out work.....get paid and let you take it from there.

Mark, everyone has given you some great advice and we agree that there can be issues with having the homeowner do some of the work. Scheduling, quality and warranty are just a few. We don't completely rule it out, however, we work with our clients on a case by case scenario. Mark, there are some jobs I could share with a DIY homeowner, but this is definitely NOT one of them. It would slow me down to train the "helper" and would impact the quality of the work. slowing the job down means iot costs more, not less.
