Fences Painting

Cedar fencing question

Hey guys...I'm asking for some input again :-)

We've got a cedar fence that has been stained the "typical" cedar color..kinda reddish. I was wondering if it's possible to make it white somehow. If I had had this installed (we inherited it this color when we bought the house) I would have either let it age/weather to a lighter color or tried a semi-transparent white stain. So is it going to have to stay "as is" or is the only option to paint it...which I'd really rather not do but...... Looking for a few thoughts/ideas. Thanks guys :-)

You might be be able to "tone" it down some with a semi-transparent product. I have been using Penofin products for years, and I am 1 of 3 "penofin pro's" in the state of Colorado. Idealy applying this to new wood is the best but you might be able to get some of the color your looking for with the "mendicino mist"

Is this product available in ND? If so, where?

The only way to keep the existing color from showing through a new coat of semi-transparent stain is to remove it.

Almost stain distributors carry a stain stripper/remover.

This is followed by an application of wood conditioner, usually containing oxalic acid. These products are rinsed off with a pressure washer and you are down to bare wood ready to restain. The ...»

products can be obtained at your local Sher-Wms. Semi-trans stains are the only product that will not eventually peel in the weather.

    Best, Chas.

Chas...Thanks for the info. It sounds like a lot of work and I'm wondering about the safety of the oxalic acid with pets and plants so close by......I may just have to live with it "as is". Still I truly appreciate the time you guys have taken to chime in :-D

    a pleasure.

Oxalic acid is known for it's harmlessness to plants, etc.

    They say it will even make your teeth whiter (-;

The stripper is not quite as harmless.

The process is a bit envolved but it works.

here is the link to the stripper / cleaner / brightener from Penofin.

    http://www.penofin.com/products_woodprep.sht...

The stripper here is a liquid (hydroxide based) the cleaners and brighteners are dry powders you mix up on site.

i would consult a painter or your local paint store for any ideas. But you might do is..take some old stain a let them match the old color with some white dye.

Thanks all. We'll say the question has adequate responses now. And who knows, I may come to love the stained cedar "as is" ;-)
