Direct vent gas stove fireplaces....I have a "fake chimney" for show only that will not have any functionality. It is at the same location that I would like to vent a direct vent gas stove....can I extend the vent pipe to go thru the chimney space horizontally for 24-30" and then exit the face of the chimney rather than having to run ) clearance piping up the chimeny to the top?

Many direct vent appliances have limits as to how "long" the exhaust plumbing can be...this varies by manufacturer and model. Having a "fake" chimney with a vent sticking out of the side wall will look kind of odd. Running it to the top would be best. was there a "something' there before?....a "fake" chimney without any type of device inside seem kind of weird. Most direct vent stacks have pretty small clearances ( 2" or so)
  • You need to read the install directions that come with the stove. Some allow horizontal venting for a set distance, some do not. Not knowing your exact stove and clearances to combustibles makes it impossible to give you a correct and safe answer. All manufactures require set distances, sizing and clearances to combustible materials. Read the install instructions. If you do not have them, or access to them. Contact the manufacture of the appliance or a qualified chimney sweep to provide you with the correct answer.
